About me

Raised in a vibrant Maori family as the eldest of seven, I learned the essence of community and support early in life. At 15, becoming a young mother and navigating the complexities of healthcare for my son, diagnosed with schizophrenia, taught me resilience and deepened my empathy. These experiences were further shaped by our cultural practices, where caregiving is a communal responsibility. I went on to have four children, each facing their own challenges. Drawing on my early experiences, I've guided them through life's hurdles, providing perspective and understanding—a testament to the transformative power of empathetic caregiving. Now, as I pursue a career in social care, I am driven by a desire to extend this support to others, especially those struggling with mental health challenges. My journey has equipped me with profound insights into the struggles many face and the impactful difference compassionate care can make. In becoming a social carer, I aim to advocate for and aid those who are often misunderstood, using my personal insights and cultural values to guide my approach. This career is not just a choice for me; it's a continuation of my life’s work of caring and community involvement. My interests are diverse and touch on multiple aspects of life. I prioritise fitness and health through nutrition and self-care routines, including meditation, strength training, road cycling, and nature walks. These activities keep me physically robust and mentally alert, essential for my personal and professional responsibilities. In the professional realm, I have spent 25 amazing years running my own clothing brand, Tamea Clothing, teaching at Tafe in the Fashion Faculty and mentoring at Greenacres in the textile projects department. These experiences have allowed me to merge my skills in teaching and learning with my passion for fashion and textile design, influencing future generations of designers. My creative side finds expression in sewing, jewelry making, and leather crafts, which I pursue with enthusiasm. Reading is another passion, providing me with relaxation and a means to broaden my perspectives. I loooooove animals especially dogs!!
