I am a mother of three grown young menmy youngest son has autism and is now 19. Since having my son I’ve been very heavily involved in raising money for Children with disabilities in the community. I have now been in the disability sector for 7 years and absolutely love it. During this time I have worked with many different disabilities and have completed a lot of training to make sure I am as knowledgeable as possible. I am very protective of people with a disability I believe that they need to be treated with respect I don’t need to be looked as less then because I have a disability, I care about their dignity and their right to be treated the same as everybody else and respected as much as everybody else. I also have Learnt many skills over the years through being a drug and alcohol counsellor/out reach worker, skills that I think I could only be helpful in this position. Skills like assertiveness and self-esteem conflict resolution ,appropriate behaviour boundaries. I am very friendly honest caring and compassionate, I work well with other people in a team setting or independently, I think fast on my feet and not much gets passed me, I’m a fun person to be around and I like to have fun and I like to see others have fun, so I think I would be a great social carer. This is a tricky question because it would totally depend on the person I was sharing with them and the skill I was sharing, but I guess, if they were interested I would show them and teach them how to do, whatever it is with patience and encouragement.
