About

When I became involved in a meditation group called the Zen Group of WA fifteen years ago, I began to realise the importance of connections to others, and how meaningful and important it is to me to be helpful to others, to listen, and to be there for each other. My first career as a Software Developer has not made it easy to foster these connections with people, which is why I am now studying part time a Bachelor of Counselling degree. I have also for years found myself talking to people on the train to work, or waiting for a bus, or on the street. I believe I will be good as a Social Carer because I like to learn about people, to listen to them and to talk to them, and to be able to help people in small ways that are meaningful and make a difference. With my partner we have looked after several rescue cats and rabbits, and at the moment have ducks and had chickens in the past. Seeing our first cat grow from a kitten into old age -- through many sicknesses small and big, and going missing overnight and then found again, getting injured, developing kidney disease, and finally to pass away -- was a privilege that taught me the value of caring and the preciousness of our loved ones, that nothing lasts forever and has to be appreciated and valued while we can. My first career has been in Software Development, so I have skills and knowledge in that area, and still a love for the art and practice of software development. I have general technical and computer skills, and can help teach those to others too. I have been the Treasurer of the Zen Group of WA and so have some basic account-keeping skills, and skill with numbers. I am a long time member of the group and appreciate the practice of meditation done alone and with others. I very much like to write, for myself and to be able to understand my thoughts and the world. I like to read books and watch tv and movies and play video games in my spare time. I have dabbled in a small amount of cookie baking, having tried out a banana fudge recipe three times over Christmas, and learning a little about how baking can go easily wrong. I have practised martial arts such as kungfu and tai chi, and some yoga, and currently enjoy going to the gym to do weight training and to run on the treadmill. I also like to sleep very much and when I am able to I very much enjoy a nap after lunch.
