After nursing my mum for the last 8 years, going through a divorce, balancing work life and looking after 1 adult son and a daughter who is now 18 I realised that spending time with elderly, even if it is just sitting down having a coffee with them is sometimes the most exciting thing they do for the day. My mother did have someone that would take her to appointments when I couldn't since being an only child did not give me the option to have family help. It was me or no one. I found the time that I spent with my mum & her friends at local cafes etc very rewarding and I wanted to do more with the elderly in particular those that don't have family support. I enjoy cooking, when i cooked for my family I would make extra meals for my mum. As time went on she was unable to cook for herself, she didn't like cardboard meals and preferred home cooked meals. Going for drives was a great way to remember the past years of her life, kept her brain active and she enjoyed seeing all the changes around town I have had my own business in the food industry, raised my kids and kept house and this is what i enjoy the most. I now feel that it is time to give back. I enjoy being with elderly as they have many great stories to tell and sometimes no one to chat to. A visit from a carer can sometimes keep them going and give them something to look forward to
