I’m a social, happy person and I really enjoy helping and being around people and creating positive experiences and memories. I take a genuine interest in the people I meet and spend time with. I grew up regionally in a big family small the South Coast of NSW and I believe the challenges that come with living regionally in a low SES area have helped to make me a well-rounded person. As we lived on a farm on the outskirts of town, I got to participate in a really tight-knit community where lending a hand was commonplace. In high school, I peer mentored junior students with physical and cognitive disabilities. This experience helped me recognise not only my own privilege, but the importance of reducing the barriers that disproportionately affect certain groups of people in the community, limiting their full participation. Upon moving to Sydney to pursue a tertiary education, I became active in my new volunteering for a number of environmental conservation programs and working as a Student Ambassador for the University of Sydney. In my personal life, I spend a lot of time volunteering at my partner’s parents’ charity ‘Give Them A Chance.org’. This is a small, family-run organisation that cares for teenage foster children, who have a variety of support requirements. I also have a family friend who has both a cognitive disability and cerebral palsy, and it’s through supporting her socially that I have found this organisation and wish to become a social carer. I also have a grandmother who is sadly suffering from dementia, and through spending time with her I have witnessed first hand her vulnerability to loneliness, and just how important it is for family and community to come together and support people in need, like my Nana. ^& ^&One of my favourite things to do in my spare time is to explore the National Parks around Sydney and go for bushwalks with friends and family. Having grown up in the country, I really love sharing that part of my upbringing with other people and I feel that bushwalking is a fantastic way to spend time getting to know someone. I have recently moved to the Lilyfield/Leichardt area, and love walking and jogging the Bay Run. I have my full driver's license and a car, and would be more than happy to drive community members around to walks and to other activities. As a physiotherapy student, I have good insight into the movement limitations of people that are elderly and/or have a disability. I understand that certain types of walks are more difficult for some compared with others, and so I am fully aware of the need to scale the walks to match the ability level of the community member. I also recognise that walking and outdoor activities are not for everyone! I also enjoy a lot of indoor hobbies, including baking. I worked for a French bakery while studying my first degree, and one of my favourite jobs was to bake the loaves of bread and the baguettes in the early morning. I think baking is a great indoor activity which caters to almost all skill levels. It involves a lot of communication, and you get to work together to produce something that you can be proud of and enjoy. As someone who has spent considerable time with elderly relatives (some of whom have had dementia), cooking and baking can often be an opportunity for an elderly person to share their skills and knowledge, rather than the other way around. This can be empowering. I'm not sure whether cooking or baking is something that can be done as a Social Carer, but if so, I am more than happy to arrange ingredients and a kitchen to cook in. I have completed risk assessments in my previous caring experience, and so I am aware that there is a process involved with arranging activities such as a bushwalk, driving people around, and arranging a cooking/baking session.
