About
Hello Like Family Team! An astrophysicist-cum-philosopher is writing to you: I am an international student pursuing a PhD at the University of Sydney. I spend most of my time solving equations, simulating universes on supercomputers, and reading philosophical texts about the big questions of life. As you can see, most of my time is spent working alone. Although I have academic opportunities to earn money, I am not interested in them because I am seeking a job that provides opportunities to socialise and connect with other people. With this in mind, I must say that I fell in love with the job description for the Social Carer role. Loneliness is a traumatic state of mind that can even be life-threatening. Could there be a better job than one that brings smiles to the faces of those going through this experience? I must share a fun fact about myself: when I am bored with my usual routine and have some free time, I go out and start conversations about life's big questions with complete strangers! One outcome of these interactions is that I learn how diverse the world is in terms of philosophical worldviews. Another outcome has been that, on numerous occasions, I have come across someone who was upset due to their life circumstances, and I had the opportunity to provide companionship for a while as we talked. Gym, books reading (science & philosophy), cricket, basketball, pickleball, video games (now I don't get much time for it, but I still love them!), and cooking. I don't have any professional experience in counselling, but I think one thing is worth mentioning: as someone who studies philosophy and enjoys engaging with others, I have come across individuals who were deeply unhappy with their lives — to the extent of having suicidal thoughts, mainly driven by the feeling that life is intrinsically meaningless. My conversations with them have often served as a way to help transform their perspective on life and the cosmos.
