About
Hi there, I’m Jill. What has motivated me to become a social carer is a growing desire to do work that genuinely makes a difference in people’s lives. For 18 months I worked for a not-for-profit organisation where I helped manage property setups and design for short-term stays, booking platforms, community engagement, and even helped set up and launch a café. While I wasn’t directly providing charity support, the work helped generate profits for charitable causes and gave me a taste for being part of something purpose driven. Last year, I had the opportunity to do some brief volunteer work at a women’s shelter. That experience really stayed with me, it opened my eyes to the impact that care, dignity and compassion can have in someone’s life, especially during challenging times. It was that experience that inspired me to begin studying a Certificate IV in Community Services part-time, so I could take a more hands on path and build the skills to support people more directly. I’ve also completed the NDIS Worker Orientation Modules, started my NDIS Worker Check Screening Check, and would be more than happy to complete a First Aid Certificate if successful. I’ve had at least two Covid shots! I believe I’d be a great social carer because I bring a wealth of life experience, I’m a good listener, empathetic and have a genuine love for helping others. I’ve worked in many people facing roles, including more recently a temporary summer job at Intercruises, where I supported cruise passengers, including those with additional needs, through check-in and disembarkation. I also help care for my beautiful mother-in-law, who is ageing and lives with a disability, by taking her to appointments, helping with household tasks and offering companionship. I’m calm, patient, and always aim to bring a sense of dignity and kindness to the people around me. I’m a naturally creative, community minded person who thrives on connection. I love to travel, painting, visiting galleries, going to the theatre and markets, and spending time with my friends. I enjoy yoga and meditation and, while the gym isn’t my favourite place, I go because I know looking after myself is important. I’m passionate about people and creating a sense of comfort and trust in my work. I’m a great listener, empathetic, and highly adaptable. I enjoy problem solving and have learned over the years how to stay calm and practical when things get busy or unpredictable. My career has given me strong communication and organisational skills, particularly through customer service roles and my experience in a not-for-profit setting. I enjoy variety and believe that flexibility, compassion and a good sense of humour are some of the most important tools I could bring into this kind of work. An interesting fact about me is that I was made in Zimbabwe, created in England and have evolved by living in the Middle East, Japan and finally ending up in Australia which is now home. I raised two amazing daughters as a single mum, and that experience taught me more than anything else about resilience, resourcefulness and unconditional care. For many years I also hosted international students in my home, not just to help financially, but because I genuinely enjoyed learning about different cultures and making people feel welcome and at ease. These life experiences have shaped who I am down to earth, positive, and reliable, with a strong sense of empathy and a natural ability to build rapport with others. I’m someone who shows up, listens, and genuinely wants to help. I have a lot of availability and can structure my study around my work schedule. I’m now ready to step into a social care role where I can bring my life experience, studies, and passion for people into work that truly matters.
