Hi, my name is Karen, I’m a young wife and Mum to three amazing kids; one high schooler, one primary schooler and a preschooler. After being a full time working Mum whilst my older two were young - I knew with our youngest that I had to find something flexible that I would love doing, something that still allows me to be around for my kids. I was going to study to become a nurse, as helping people has always been something I’m good at - but the crazy hours with small children was always the one thing standing in the way of me working in my dream occupation! My husband sent me a link to the Homecare Heroes page, and I honestly felt butterflies in my tummy. I knew whilst reading the job description that I’d finally found something that fits the brief! I’m great with elderly and young people. I have great experience in a variety of customer service roles. I love listening to people and their stories, and will drop everything to help out friends and family in need. Over the past three years, I’ve been a stay at home Mum for the most part, working very casually in my pre career job - mainly focusing on my children. So any achievements in the corporate world are almost a distant memory for me right now! My most treasured recent achievement is birthing our beautiful daughter in October 2015. She was born with a birth defect which thankfully was detected in utero, and required life saving surgery on day two of her little life. We experienced a really difficult pregnancy due to her defect, and her first two years of life were spent in and out of hospital. She is such an amazing, typical little 2.5 year old now - you’d barely know the hurdles she’s had to jump if it weren’t for the scar on her tummy! So I guess, instead of climbing the corporate ladder for the past few years, my focus has been supporting our girl through everything she’s gone through, whilst also being a rock for her big brothers, who found her issues quite difficult to come to terms with. A favourite quote of mine is: I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel - Maya Angelou I try to remember this quote if I’m having a particularly bad day. It’s easy to take it out on the people around you, when it’s really not their fault. I know how it feels to be the subject of someone’s bad mood (I’m mother to two “tweenagers”), and it doesn’t feel nice!
