How we can support you on holidays
Depending on your NDIS plan, you may be able to use some of your funding to cover the expenses of a support worker during a holiday. This could include:
- Help accessing transport, whether that’s by car, train, boat, or even plane!
- Learning new skills, like how to use Google Maps to explore a new city
- Attending social events with a companion by your side

FAQs
Can I use my NDIS funding to book a holiday?
The NDIS only funds supports and services that are deemed reasonable and necessary for your needs. This means it won’t typically cover holiday-related expenses (like your flights or accommodation).
However, you may be able to use your funding to cover:
- expenses related to hiring a support worker during your holiday
- additional fees for hiring accessible transport or accessible accommodation
- excess baggage costs if you need to bring special equipment with you
- short-term accommodation (max stay is 2 weeks — you'll need permission from the NDIS if you wish to stay for longer)
We highly recommend chatting to your support coordinator or LAC about this!
How can a support worker assist me while on holidays?
Our support workers can help you with a range of social support activities during a trip, like providing transport, accompanying you to social events, and helping with meal prep. They can't help with anything related to medical or personal care, like showering and dressing.
What are some examples of trips that a support worker and I can do together?
Depending on your interests and goals, you could:
- Go on a road trip to a new destination
- Attend a major sporting or music event in another city, like the Australian Open
- Go on an overnight cruise
- Get help visiting family or friends in a different state
- Attend celebrations like Schoolies
Who will cover expenses during the holiday, like flights and accommodation?
Before your trip takes place, make sure to discuss who will be responsible for paying for what. Perhaps you'll be happy to pay for your support worker's flights, but not their meals or accomodation. Clarifying expenses in advance will save you from awkward conversations later!
Will a support worker provide support throughout the whole trip? What if I don't require support for the whole time?
Our team can put together a quote based on how many support hours you need during your trip. We may be able to match you with a support worker who lives near your destination city, so you don't have to pay for as many support hours and travel costs.
Are there any restrictions on how short or long the holiday can be?
Our minimum booking length is 1 hour! If you're expecting to need a support worker for a long period of time, please reach out to our Customer Care team at hello@likefamily.com.au or on 1800 545 332 to get a quote.
Can I travel overseas with a Like Family support worker?
It depends. If you're an NDIS participant, you may be able to use your supports and funding for up to 6 weeks overseas (the NDIS calls this a "grace period"). If you're planning on being overseas for longer than this, you'll need to contact the NDIS to request an extension to this grace period.
