Having been a secondary school teacher for the past 8.5 years, I have been in charge of different home classes. This also means that I get exposed to diverse groups of students of different background and needs. It is on a day to day basis that I help these students navigate challenges, while collaborating with my fellow colleagues, relevant and students' families that I have come to realise that I get a deep sense of satisfaction from these works that I do. Also, during my secondary school time, I remember volunteering on a weekly basis at an elderly home and a children's home, offering my services of companionship and mentorship. All of these experiences led me to become a teacher. Now that I am here as an accompanying spouse to my husband pursuing his masters, I would like to contribute to the community by becoming a Social Carer. I think that I will be good at it as empathy and patience are two of my top qualities My clients are already faced with challenges that they are trying their best to overcome. If I, as a Social Carer cannot provide them with that understanding and calm composure, to progress at their own pace, how can I then provide them with informed and effective support or even gain trust from them? Next will be my personal strength of adaptability and optimism. Just like every one of us, every participant is different and they have different needs, different communication styles and come from different background. I will need to be able to adjust my approach based on the individual's needs and provide personalised support. I will also probably be the one that they will look up too, hence, my positive outlook whenever I am with them will allow them to be inspired and encouraged to reach their goals no matter how hard they may be. By profession and skills, I am a teacher, specialising in Music and Drama. I love how I get express myself in different ways and at the same time, finding peace in both the art form whenever I listen or practice. In the rest of my free time, there are a few things that I do. I love to cook and try out new recipes even if it doesn't really turn out the way I want them to be at times. I also love connecting with nature. whenever I get a chance to. Going on walks and taking on hikes when traveling is what I dream about too. There are times when I like to stay home and read a good novel or memoir. Recently, I also took up training in Barista skills and can make a decent cup of coffee too! I am interested to spend time with members of all ages and get to know them better.
