I am from a small town which for the period of time I was growing up lacked the appropriate infrastructure/support networks for people with disabilities and mental health issues. I was friends with a number of people who were living with disabilities and mental health issues and I saw them treated unjustly by members of the community and some even ended up incarcerated due to poor judgment and misguidance. I believe that with early intervention, support and mentorship some of the hardships my friends had to face would have been alleviated. Furthermore I have a family history of schizophrenia as well as family members suffering from PTSD. My personal experience is why I am passionate about pursuing a career in support work. I hope to give people the opportunity to be heard and to enable them to feel autonomy over their lives. While I lack professional experience in the support work field I believe I make up for that through lived experience with close friends, family and other community members. I am very passionate about music and play a few instruments but mainly guitar. I enjoy being outside where I can go on bush walks, skateboard and work out. I used to be a gardener/landscaper so I still enjoy doing gardening in my own backyard. I love cooking. My mother is Sri Lankan and has taught me many recipes so I spend alot of my free time going too the markets and cooking I have an ABN and hold my full Victorian license with access to my own fully insured vehicle at all times. I am willing to get a working with children’s check again as I believe my previous one has expired. I have completed my NDIS screening and am awaiting a response, I was made to supply an organization name so I used Like Family. During my time in my Bachelor of Secondary Education (I left before completing it) I spent a large portion of one of my pracs in the learning support unit. I was responsible for making sure each child's needs are met both in the classroom and during break times and ensuring that children in the learning support unit have opportunities to interact with children in mainstreamed classes if they should wish too. This experience gave my some insight into how too cater to a diverse range of communication abilities/preferences.
