About
I genuinely want to help people around me as I believe that humans are the best resource other humans have. Being a 3rd-year medical student, I know that working for community health is something I am very interested in, including both the science and human interaction parts. I grew up in Singapore, but currently live in Australia as an international student, so I am pretty independent and good at house tasks like cooking and cleaning. My experience volunteering long term at the Movement for Intellectually Disabled Singapore (MINDS) has taught me that I can be very patient and non-judgemental and I enjoy understanding the needs of the individual, to cater my care specifically to them. I also have an invisible disability, which I see as a strength because it gives me more compassion and a better understanding of people with health issues, their struggles, and everything else it entails. I would first identify which of my hobbies aligns with the individual's interest as the main purpose is for them to enjoy the activity. We could spend the first few meet-ups trying different things to see what they like the most. Once I have identified the hobby to share with them, I would start with something simple. For example, if the hobby is hiking/bushwalking, we can find an easy trail nearby and start with that. I would also ensure that the individual enjoys the activity and we can progress on to longer/steeper and more complicated hikes with time. If they lose interest, we can always change the activity and indulge in something else. My general approach would still be to explore different things first from the easiest difficulty levels, working our way up to more complicated things.
