I have been working as a support care worker for the past 6 months with 3 members. A male who has dementia, his wife who has had a kidney removed, and a son who suffered a brain injury when he was younger. As a support worker, I have helped them with doctor appointments, hospital visits, help around the house, and more importantly offer them companionship and someone to talk to. I am 40 years of age and lost my partner 12 years ago when my son was 6. He is now 18 and I have been a single parent to him for the past 12 years. We live with my parents who are in their 70s and also my grandfather who is 94. My life has always been around helping people and being in unique situations where kindness, patience, and empathy have played a major role and that is something I feel I have as a person. I got into the support care work as I knew I could make a difference in being able to help people with their day-to-day lives who may not have anyone to support them. I’m looking to try and help people achieve their day to day goals while also being a friend and someone that can be there for them.
