About

I’d like to impart some information about myself and why I’d like to help the elderly. I am a 61 year old male, born in Sydney of Finnish immigrant (Australian citizens) parents. In the past 10 years or so have become more understanding of what it is like to age. I have seen my late mother go through some debilitating diseases in her later life and now take it upon myself (along with my sister) to help care and assist my elderly father in his twilight years (which I hope are long). I’ve always liked people to like me, but not at the expense of my integrity or that of my employer of course. I like being professional yet casual enough to engage people in conversation in a relaxed manner, whether it be personal or business. I still call many of my friends parents Mr and Mrs (something instilled in my generation I believe) because respect for people is paramount - respect is a two-way street as I always say. I have been staying with my elderly widowed father (88 yrs old) for months at a time over the past few years with him to spend time and care/help him with his daily life tasks and (often) medical appointments – and most importantly, spend time with him as father and son (something I missed with my late mother in her later years while I was working overseas). We all get old and so too do our bodies and minds. As such I am very aware as a “senior” person about peoples needs, problems and loneliness. My interests are varied and many and include: • Food and cooking • Sports (watching and playing) and exercise • Walks & nature • Music and theatre/cinema • Travel • And more The above being said, I feel that I would be a good candidate to be involved in the assistance of people with their daily life activities in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney. Should I be considered suitable as a Social Carer I am more than eager to start helping those who need company and assistance with their days.^& ^&The skill/hobby will depend on the person(s) and their interests and/or experience. Obviously the first point in sharing would be simply talking, discussing and finding out common interests or ones that overlap and then take it from there. Interests can be many and varied so I would want to see what the person finds most interesting and would also depend on their mobility if there was to be any visiting of venues/establishment, people or other.^&
