I was born in Sri Lanka and had experience working with diverse cultural and vulnerable groups, not limited to my home country but in Indonesia. In Sri Lanka, I have engaged with several community services as a volunteer and professional to improve community wellbeing. Most importantly, I worked for the Sri Lanka Red Cross where I enjoyed and experienced the passion of caring for people which has become a part of my life. Therefore, I joined Australian Red Cross as a shop volunteer. Even though the opportunity is not directly assisting communities, I believe that my every action as a volunteer would serve to support disadvantaged people. I always enjoy working with people as it is an everyday challenge. First I would have a background chat with the person, including a general greeting, introducing myself, asking for his/her name etc. Then I would discuss leisure time activities that we both do. If I find that we both like reading books or watching movies, then I continue the dialog about which books/ movies he/she likes and what I like. I will share my experience of managing time for my hobby amid my job, like reading e-books/ a movie on Friday night etc. If that person has another experience of allocating time for his/her hobby I accept it and say that I would try it out. If we have different tastes or hobbies I encourage him/her to share her experience and then I explain mine. I make sure to respect any hobby he/she practice eventhogh It is not my taste.
