Growing up I have always had an innate interest in the lives and experiences of everyday people from all backgrounds. Being fortunate enough to travel with my family I have gained an appreciation for the way of life of those in many different countries, religions, and cultures. I believe this has instilled a natural desire to connect with new people to share experiences to learn, understand, and improve ourselves both in character and mind. Additionally, throughout my various forms of employment and everyday life I have been fortunate enough to work with individuals often facing challenges which are not normally appreciated or seen in everyday life. This includes elderly with hearing or physical impairments, students with attention deficit disorders and chronic fatigue, as well as colleagues who struggle with anxiety or trepidation in social environments. From all these relationships and experiences I have come to recognise the importance in providing support for such people. Whether that be subtly seeking to cater to their needs such as always being mindful to speak clearly and including those who may struggle with hearing, or, being mindful to keep those with anxiety feeling welcomed, heard, and respected to minimise their discomfort or unwillingness to engage. I of course recognise the many more complex and challenging situations people are in which I have yet had significant exposure to, however am only therefore eager and willing to engage and learn with these such people. Ultimately, I believe that no matter what a person is struggling with either mentally or physically, they should not be made to feel different or less capable than anyone else. It is for that reason that when coming across this job, I recognised a potential platform for me to better the life of someone who needs a helping hand, OR, just a friend. Furthermore, benefiting myself in learning valuable lessons and growing my understanding of the world we live in and all of its diverse people. In my recent time at school I was elected by my Head of House to attend a Year 9 development camp as an older student leader (Year 12 at the time) to be a relatable and approachable figure for the students instead of the teachers. In this capacity I sat in on various character development workshops in which the students shared their experiences and tough times at school or home in order to recognise and empathise with other people's struggles. Many of the students opened up about rather meaningful and difficult situations they were facing, where I was able to support them and open up about my own similar or relevant issues. The aim was to allow the students to recognise that opening up is okay and encouraged. Ultimately, I feel that my invitation to attend this camp in such capacity was a reflection of my character and ability to connect with people which was evidently recognised by my teachers. Qualities which I feel are heavily relevant to the role of a Social Carer. Before I graduate from university and enter the big wide world of suits and offices, I am looking to engage in a form of community service as well as a casual/part-time employment alongside my studies. I am eager to learn and engage and commit to something bigger than myself which is why I believe Like Family would be the right fit. My Mum always told me I had a thing for people, whether that be listening to understand and help, or knowing when to engage, the right things to say, and how to connect. Now, I'd argue anyone would be silly not to trust their Mum so I feel comfortable passing that on to you. However, personally, and somewhat agreeing with that, I feel I thrive off of social interaction. I'm constantly looking to meet new people and love to expand my social circle. Some of my hobbies include sports like skiing, F1, rowing, Footy, Soccer, or even a walk/run. I also love to sit down and watch a movie/show, would die without taking a break to listen to some music once in a while, and even do some casual drawing or DIY's. I'm passionate about improving myself and the lives of those around me as I can only be my happiest self if those around me are too. Also, I love to cook, just take a drive with the windows down, catch up with a friend, and travel/explore to see and learn new things. I come from a very loving, caring, and excepting family. Truly, I think that that has extended onto our friends and even colleagues. Hence, I'm never one to turn down someone new and make them family too. I also learnt Italian throughout school and also speak it with my dad who is fluent, so I love to converse with other speakers too.
