I have a range of skills I can bring to the role as social carer. I’m passionate about building relationships and rapport built on mutual respect and trust. I’ve had vast experience interacting with many people from a variety of cultures throughout my career as a Primary school teacher as well as through my volunteer work over the years. I am friendly and an excellent active listener because I enjoy getting to know other people. Through getting to know people I can suggest community groups and activities the person may like to participate in. This is an opportunity for the person through encouragement and support if required, to engage socially with others. When engaging with people in conversation I speak clearly and appropriately to the situation. I’m empathetic and patient regardless of the type of activity. I’m encouraging and supportive of facilitating people to do activities that build independence and confidence. ^& ^&I would be able to share one of my skills or hobbies, firstly by finding if this is of interest to the client and if it is I could talk with them about this interest. Through this conversation I would speak about the positives of the skill or hobby. I’d ask them if they would like to learn more about the skill or hobby. If they replied yes, I would show them the utensils or materials that need to be used and how they’re used (some skills and hobbies might not require skills or utensils). From here I would go through the steps of the skill or explain the hobby, pausing at times to check if the client understands or would like to ask a question. From there, we could give it a go together!^&
