As a teacher, I truly believe my professional strengths lie in my compassion, empathy and ability to significantly engage with a diverse range of people. I have prided myself on my ability to quickly and efficiently build positive relationships with people, and have found this to have been particularly significant with people experiencing mental health issues or social isolation. I take genuine interest in understanding people’s interests, stories, and aptitudes as I engage with them, ensure that the wellbeing of my wards is the focus of my efforts, and that interactions are tailored to the specific needs, interests and aptitudes of the individual. I am nonjudgmental, and extremely positive in all interactions and truly wish to promote wellbeing of those I work with. More personally, I have witnessed the impact of social isolation, mental health disorders, and non-neurotypicality. I have witnessed this in a school setting, seen the significant improvements to mental health that come with personal connection, and been concerned about the future of many students once they leave the school community. I also have an elderly grandmother who lives in an aged care facility and a grandfather who suffered from dementia. While my grandmother is blessed with extensive community connection, I have observed the isolation of many residents and remember the gratitude I had for social carers who worked with my grandfather to improve his quality of life. I would be honoured to provide the same level of support to vulnerable people. It should also be noted that I have extensive experience building PCs. I did this professionally between 2012 and 2014 as I worked in a computer store which built, sold, and repaired PCs. I have, moreover, pursued it as a hobby since adolescence and remain well versed in the current hardware market and administrative features of Windows and, to a lesser degree, Linux systems. ^& ^&As a teacher, sharing skills is one of my most significant strengths. I ensure that I take the time to understand someone’s current abilities and aptitudes to provide the scaffolding necessary to keep them in the ‘goldilocks zone’ where a task is not frustratingly challenging or overly simple. My approach, furthermore, always retains a positive and growth-oriented focus which highlights achievement and presents challenges as opportunities to improve. In the context of PC construction, for example, I would begin by discussing the process with my ward to gauge their level of understanding regarding the significance of different components and software, and to identify the supports I could provide to assist them in achieving the goal. If they expressed a level of confidence regarding hardware selection, but were not able to articulate the processes involved in the installation of an operating system, I would supervise the construction of the PC with minimal intervention, break the installation of the operating system down into steps that were manageable to the level of the person and assume any responsibilities that were overly complex to ensure they achieved their goal. In this sense, my approach would always be dependent on the individual; ensuring positivity, success and growth. ^&
