A great social carer has the ability to engage others within their community of choice in a way that feels good to the client & does not undermine their agency in any way. I have the capacity to connect with people from all walks of life and very quickly understand their passions and what makes them tick. My background and training as a counsellor with children and adults has supported me to develop a high level of empathy, respect and regard for the experiences and choices of others. The people that I work with come to understand and appreciate themselves through the development of practical skills that can be applied into social, work and personal situations in order to improve quality of life & interaction. A broad range of interests and skills means that I can share in or facilitate diverse activities, from bouldering to sewing to planting a vegetable garden to sculpture to surf to survival skills. I love the outdoors and creative pursuits, and sharing these in a meaningful way. ^& ^&In London I was able to share my cooking & catering skills with a group of individuals at the Holy Cross Centre Trust. I had previously run a small cake catering business, and developed a cooking class for homeless individuals at the centre, with participants co-facilitating the sessions and eventually leading their own class. This can be done on a much simpler basis, for example taking an individual through the process of creating a meal- from choosing recipes to sourcing ingredients to creating the meal and potentially sharing it with others.^&
