Hello! My name's Jake :) My motivation to become a social carer with Like Family, comes from a series of affirmations and a culmination of experiences throughout my life. I have had many years of experience with vulnerable communities, such as with the elderly at my local nursing home and the homeless or those in need. Through these experiences, I believe I have been nurtured into someone who is empathic, patient and just genuinely caring for everyone around me, especially those in need. For as long as I can remember, I have been provided help and care in so many ways from a vast number of people. As much as I try to return the favour by giving back to those who have helped me, I have also realised the importance and value of paying it forward. I would love to be a social carer. Perhaps more than that, I would love to be a friend. Someone to let the members know that they are cared for, appreciated and loved. I also believe I have been able to develop strong perseverance, allowing greater resilience to stress when facing daily challenges. I understand that there may be times of difficulty or great challenge when helping as a social carer. However I believe I will be able to maintain composure and always have a positive outlook no matter what the situation is. Due to my vast interests and hobbies, I like to see myself as a Jack of all trades. I genuinely enjoy so much of what we call, in its togetherness, life. I am always keen to try new things or challenges. I think in that sense, I am someone who is very adaptable and will be able to provide and share joy in many different aspects. I absolutely love spending time indoors working on puzzles or building LEGO. But I also love going outside, whether it be to go stargazing or venturing into every corner of the art gallery, making sure to see every artwork there is to see! However, I believe one of my stronger suits is definitely in sports. Due to my past experience in coaching, I believe this is one way I can share my passion, skills and hobbies with someone in the community. I imagine myself teaching someone I'm caring for how to dig, set and spike a volleyball. I imagine myself playing catch with him/her at a local park or sitting together in front of a TV watching Major League Baseball. There are so many ways for me to share my hobbies and skills. But I am equally keen, if not more, to learn about the hobbies of the person I'm caring for; to immerse myself in their world and their passions. Needless to say, I am SUPER excited to meet you and I hope an opportunity will come soon!
