About

Hi there! I would love to become a social carer because I find helping others, and building meaningful connections with people to be very fulfulling, and therefore think I would thrive in this type of work. I have previous experience with elderly people, as I have helped care for my grandmother, of 96 years old, for years. This was mainly through social tasks, like assisting her to doctors appointments, taking her grocery shopping, helping her talk to people in public, as she is hard of hearing. She is mostly deaf, so I have learnt how to communicate with her in suitable ways. I also have spent much of my life around people experiencing mental health issues or mental illness, and have built meaningful and helpful connections with these people, assisting them through difficult times. Although I have no formal work experience as a carer, I believe I have the traits and qualities required to be an excellent carer. This includes compassion, empathy, emotional intelligence, understandings of mental health issues such as OCD, anxiety disorders, depression, and PTSD, experience in companionship and social assistance with my grandmother, and overall a deep value of kindness, respect, and care. I hold care and kindness very close to my heart, and think they are the most important factors in building a caring, safe and supportive society. My passion is helping people and making the world a kinder and more caring place. I firmly believe in community as the foundation for a socially just and connected world. I have hobbies in arts, crafts, writing, reading, community events and connections, and like to get involved in my local area with various events and initiatives. I have a broad range of interests, from clay to board games to thrift shopping to outdoor activities. I believe this will lead to being able to connect with most people! I have volunteered at the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC), for the past three years, and for the last year and a half have fulfilled the role of the secretary. I organise local events, welcome new members into our group, and help facilitate and plan actions and community building. This experience has made me very sociable, and socially conscious. I find it very easy to talk and connect with people from all walks of life, and find kindness to be the most important aspect of all interactions with people I meet. I have also studied sociology in university, and have learnt about different social experiences and realities, including oppression and disadvantage. I understand that society treats some of its members unfairly, and there is often a lack of support for vulnerable people, or those who need various forms of assistance. Within these studies I have learnt qualitative research methods, which essentially have given me an understanding of social ethics when interacting with a range of different people, and how to interact with people in a friendly, warm manner. I think these skills will suit this role well.
