Introducing Melinda; our first Social Carer to be celebrated as part of our brand new 'Meet the Family' series. We’re excited to bring you guys wins, stories, tips and words of advice, from one Social Carer to another!

Tell us a little about yourself and your Home Care Social Carer experience!

Hi, I’m Mel and been with Like Family since January 2018. I love being able to help people reach their personal goals and towards maintaining or gaining independence. I am also a Scout Leader/Leader-in-Charge of a disability scout group in Sydney. All up, I’ve been working with disabilities for nearly 10 years and behavioural therapy since about 2004/5.

What are your top tips for other Social Carers?

  1. Make sure you have a back up Social Carer for your clients that they are confident with and know. Get to know the Social Carers in your area, as you never know when you might get sick or need a holiday. Your clients will appreciate the continuity of care and this puts them in control!
  2. Listen to your clients. If they have communication difficulties, try picture cards, Key Word Sign or Auslan. There are many resources available on the internet to help. Be patient and empathise by imagining what you would like in their situation.

Happy Social Carer'ing!
