Helping parents find the right support workers

Meet Denise, a mother of two kids who receive NDIS supports. She was looking for support workers who are caring, loyal, compassionate and understanding of people with disability.

She found out about Like Family through her support coordinator, and soon met Philip, one of our wonderful Social Carers (support workers). She tells us about what it's like raising two kids with autism, and how she's seen improvements in their independence, social interactions and engagement since joining Like Family.

Like Family works with hundreds of parents just like Denise throughout New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. We help them find and connect with support workers who match their child's interests, needs and location.

Here are three benefits we provide to parents looking for respite, or to support their children to live independently.

1. Passionate, thoroughly vetted Social Carers

Our Social Carers are everyday people who want to help people and make a positive change in the community. Before someone comes on board as a Social Carer, they are carefully screened and undergo a comprehensive onboarding process depending on the type of work they want to do and who they want to support. This includes reference checks, an online values test, and all relevant industry checks (like an NDIS Worker Check).

Unlike many other providers, we don’t just endlessly rotate staff. As a parent, you or your child have complete choice and control of who you engage. If your child has found someone they like, there is no need to endure the frustration of repeating instructions to new disability support workers. You can choose to see the same Social Carer with regular Activities each week.

2.       Free Meet and Greets

We know how important it is to meet a prospective support worker before committing to ongoing support. That's why we offer up to 5  1-hour free Meet and Greet sessions.

A Meet and Greet is a great way for you and a Social Carer to be introduced prior to bookings, and have a brief chat to break the ice.

It is recommended the meeting takes no longer than an hour, and should be hosted either at your home, a local café or even via an online video meeting.

A Meet and Greet is the perfect opportunity for the Member to determine if the Social Carer is the right fit for them, as well as to run through logistical points such as the regular time and days the service will be required. Here are some topics you may like to cover:

  • When the Social Carer is available, including any upcoming leave
  • What support experience or qualifications they have
  • How expenses like public transport will be covered
  • Any triggers or behaviours they should be aware of
  • Their interests, skills and hobbies

3. Quick and easy to get started

Finding the right Social Carer is easier than you think.

  1. Create a free Like Family account
  2. Tell us a bit about your child's needs and interests, so we can match them with the right Carer
  3. Post an Activity describing what type of support you're looking for and when
  4. Start connecting with Social Carers!
