The notion of introducing someone new into your everyday life can seem daunting for anyone, but that is especially so for someone who needs reliable disability or aged care support. Whether you use non-medical care services for yourself, a loved one or a client, do you find yourself often frustrated by the endless rotation of support worker staff? Do you never seem able to develop a special connection with anyone?

In this article, we provide some insight into the thorough vetting process conducted by our team to verify anyone before they come on board as a Social Carer.

Online values test

It is of the utmost importance to us that all Members of Like Family have peace of mind knowing that each and every one of our Social Carers have all been carefully screened. Support should be a fulfilling, fun and motivational time for everyone involved. We do not bring onboard people who are just looking to get paid, we want people who are genuinely looking to help others and make the world a better, more inclusive place.

In order to become a Social Carer and join our community, a person must initially complete an online values test - to ensure their motivations, attitudes and values meet our standards.

Group induction

Like Family requires all Social Carers who want to provide social support to attend a group induction. It involves some short introductory exercises and role play exercises, followed by a short quiz. This allows us to assess whether they have the necessary skills and attitude to flourish as a Social Carer.

Documentation

Social Carers must have certain documents verified before they can start supporting our Members, depending on what work they want to do. This can include:

  • an NDIS Worker Screening Check or National Police Check (for non-NDIS Members)
  • proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • COVID-19 Infection Control Training module
  • NDIS Worker Orientation module (to support NDIS Members)
  • 100 points of ID, to prove the right to work in Australia
  • a Working with Children Check or Blue Card, if they want to support Members under the age of 18
  • a valid driver licence and proof of vehicle registration, if they wish to provide transport

All applicants must provide details of 3 referees who can confirm they have the necessary attitude, traits, and skills to be a Social Carer. We ask for a combination of character and employment references.

Policies and procedures

Like Family also has in place a number of policies and procedures to be followed, such as the Social Carers Code of Conduct – which outlines the expectations around professional conduct and the behaviour expected from all Social Carers, such as acting with integrity, honesty and transparency.
