During my time working at Anglicare SQ I was able to work with a lot of the young people who were in care, which was very much the highlight of my role. I was blessed to be able to attend camping trips and doing school holiday activities with the young people, watching them overcome obstacles while also pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I was also responsible for organising training for the Foster/Kinship carers every month, and sometimes I ran those training sessions on topics such as self care, social networking and scrapbooking. While there I was also able to complete my Diploma in Community Care, and was excited to learn about working with people with special needs, and the values the teacher described was the same values I have when working with people in the community. ^& ^&I would begin by learning more about the person, and what their interests are. I wouldn't want our time together to be wasted on an activity that they were not interested in. If they were interested in dance, we could look at attending some dance classes, maybe something like line dancing or zumba. I would make sure I got into the activity with them so they would not feel alone, but I would let them take the spotlight, after all, it is about them not myself. If it was a craft exercise, I would explain what we were doing in clear and simple instructions, breaking down each step and working together. We would celebrate every successful step, and if a not so successful step we would work together to either remedy this, or celebrate the creative new direction we were going it. Arts and crafts are meant to be fun, so making it fun and not a serious activity.^&
